Hold Point / Witness Point

See how to use Hold Points and Witness points when inspections or verifications are required.

What is it?

There are two important inspection actions that must be carried out in respect of the Inspection and Test Plan, they are called Hold Points and Witness points.

They are points in the construction stage where inspection or verification is required.

Their purpose is to make sure specification requirements have complied accordingly and to proceed for the following activities.

Why would you want it?

The definition of a Hold Point versus a Witness Point:

A Hold Point is a mandatory verification point beyond which work cannot proceed without approval by the designated authority, typically the Engineer or Consultant or 3rd Party Inspector. Work cannot proceed until receipt of a Hold Point Release issued by the person(s) whom inspected the work.

A Witness Point is an identified point in the process where the designated authority, typically the Engineer or Consultant or 3rd Party Inspector may review, witness, inspect method or process of work. The activities, however, may proceed.
