Prepare your test plan information

Learn the definitions for each field in a test plan, including its activities.

Before you create a test plan or template there's a few details you need to know to ensure you complete it correctly.

Every test plan has a manager and an approver:

  • Manager: The organization or user who oversees the overall test plan. They mark activities as complete after the assignees complete their work. They also submit the test plan to the approver and can override a Hold Point if a reviewer is not available.
  • Approver: The organization or user who has final authority to close the test plan after it's been submitted.

Activities in the test plan are broken into relevant sections to keep things organized. For each activity you can enter the following information:

  • Activity Description: Describe the work you want the assignee to perform. This is the only required field.
  • Acceptance Criteria: The requirements to complete the activity. Define the conditions that must be met to consider the activity complete and performed to satisfaction.
  • Method: How the activity should be performed, tested or inspected. Define the specific procedures or techniques to be used.
  • Frequency: How often the activity should be performed, tested or inspected.
  • Assignee: The user or organization responsible for performing the activity.
  • Reference Documents: These documents act as a supporting documentation or specification for the assignee while performing the activity. Link up to 10 documents from the document register to each activity. Make sure you've added them to your document register
  • Notes: Details of any other references or resources.
  • Records Required: Explain what records the assignee needs to provide as evidence of their work. For example, an inspection checklist or photos.
  • Inspection Templates: If the assignee needs to complete an inspection checklist, you can add the inspection template that you want them to use. Add up to five inspection templates to each activity. Make sure you've created your inspection templates first.
  • Reviewer Action and Reviewer: Add a reviewer if the work need to be inspected or approved. If you choose a Hold Point, it must be released before the next activities can start. If you choose any other reviewer action, the next activities can be started before the review is completed. You can add multiple reviewer actions if needed. You'll need to Create Reviewer Actions (other than Hold Point and Witness Point).
